New Relationships in Operator-Based Backward Motion Compensation

چکیده
The class of motion estimation algorithms known as backward methods have the advantage of dense motion eld sampling, and in coding applications the decoder needs no motion information from the coder. In this paper, we rst present an overview of operator based motion compensators with interpolative and non-interpolative kernels. We then proceed with two new results. The rst ooers a new perspective on the classical pel-recursive methods; one that exposes the weaknesses of traditional approaches and ooers an explanation for the improved performance of operator-based algorithms. The second result introduces a minimum norm intra-frame operator and establishes an equivalence relationship between this and the original (least squares) operator. This equivalence induces interesting duality properties that, in addition to ooering insights into operator-based motion estimators, can be used to relax either the maximum needed computational power or the frame buuer length.

Backward motion compensation for interlaced HDTV
The pel-recursive approach to motion estimation has been widely studied for compensating progressively scanned, moderate-resolution video. Although pel-recursive algorithms may not be suitable for application to interlaced high-definition television (HDTV), the underlying principle of backward motion compensation, upon which pel-recursive algorithms are based, can be exploited to improve existi...
متن کاملOperator-Based Backward Motion Estimation
Backward motion estimation consists of the class of motion algorithms that do not transmit motion information directly, but rather compute it at the decoder from already transmitted data. Traditional backward algorithms { also known as pel-recursion { rely on continuous image models, and apply resulting parameters onto sampled data. Within the framework of this approach, it is not feasible to i...
متن کاملLow-Band-Shifted Hierarchical Backward Motion Estimation, Compensation for Wavelet-Based Video Coding
A new framework for block-based backward motion compensation in wavelet scalable video coding scheme is proposed. Motion estimation and compensation are hierarchically conducted in wavelet domain using coarser level lowpass subband in the current frame and synthesized next finer level lowpass subband in the reference frame, hence, the motion information does not need to be transmitted. To allev...
متن کاملIterative least squares and compression based estimations for a four-parameter linear global motion model and global motion compensation
In this paper, a four-parameter model for global motion in image sequences is proposed. The model is generalized and can accommodate global object motions besides the motions due to the camera movements. Only the PAN and the ZOOM global motions are considered because of their relatively more frequent occurrences in real video sequences. Besides the traditional leastsquares estimation scheme, tw...
متن کاملBackward-forward Motion Compensated Prediction
This paper presents new methods for use of dense motion fields for motion compensation of interlaced video. The motion is estimated using previously decoded field-images. An initial motion compensated prediction is produced using the assumption that the motion is predictable in time. The motion estimation algorithm is phase-based and uses two or three field-images to achieve motion estimates wi...
